The Chattogram Cyber Tribunal on Monday sent two directors and the chief operating officer of private television channel Deepto TV to jail in a case filed in 2016 under the Information and Communication Technology Act for producing news reports on former expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment minister Nurul Islam and his son Md Mujibur Rahman.
Chattogram Cyber Tribunal Judge Md Zahirul Kabir passed the order on Monday, plaintiff’s lawyer Iftekhar Shimul Chowdhury told New Age.
The accused are Deepto TV’s directors Kazi Zahin Hasan and Kazi Rabet Hasan and chief operating officer Kazi Urfi Ahmed.
Lawyer Iftekhar told New Age that the court had initially ordered to send Deepto TV’s managing director Kazi Zahedul Hasan, directors Kazi Zahin Hasan and Kazi Rabet Hasan and chief operating officer Kazi Urfi Ahmed to jail.
But later in the afternoon, the court reviewed the previous order and granted bail to Kazi Zahedul Hasan, also the managing director of Kazi Farms Group.
An employee of Sanowara group, owned by former overseas employment and welfare minister Nurul Islam and his son Md Mujibur Rahman, filed the case under the ICT Act with the Chawkbazar police station in Chattogram on April 3, 2016, following news reports on Nurul and Mujibur.
Deepto TV’s managing director Kazi Zahedul Hasan, directors and its reporter were sued in two other cases, also filed under the ICT Act by the employees of Sanowara group for producing news reports.
Defence lawyer AHM Zia Uddin told New Age that they filed a special petition seeking bail for Kazi Zahedul Hasan considering his age and physical conditions and the court granted bail to him.
‘There will be another bail hearing for three others on Tuesday,’ he said.
The cases were filed on charges of producing reports titled ‘Attack on employees of Kazi Farms and minister son’s intention to occupy land’, ‘Minister’s son constructs building in Chattogram occupying expatriate’s land’, and ‘Attack on journalists’.
In the complaints, it was mentioned that these news reports were fake and fabricated and done with bad intention to defame the former minister and his son.
